Covid-19

Kerrville, TX - March 12, 2020. As news that the Novel Coronavirus (better identified as Covid-19) has reached the shores of the United States unfolds, I know there is great fear and concern about the health and safety of our loved ones and the manner in which our lives may be impacted by these events. As businesses and foundational events begin to close, parents are beginning to call and email the TLC office, as are prospective staff members, to inquire about the status of TLC and Summer Camp 2020. As of this writing, we are on target to open and are busy making every preparation for the coming season.

One of the things I might place all in remembrance of, is that this is not the first time that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a pandemic due to a Novel Coronavirus in recent memory. As you might have forgotten, H1N1 (the swine flu) is also a Coronavirus, is also highly contagious, has the capacity to cause fatalities and was declared a pandemic in 2009 by the WHO. The life-cycle of the H1N1 virus pandemic spanned our summer camp operation without issue in spite of there being documented cases in the area.

That is not to suggest that Covid-19 is not to be taken seriously. This contagion should absolutely be respected and every precaution taken according to the advice of the CDC, DSHS, local agencies and your own healthcare providers.

As the summer season approaches, there are habits that each of us should begin to employ in our daily lives now, to keep ourselves and others safe within the Camp environment. Our goal is to disrupt the compounding curve and slow the progression of this virus. Things we know to do now, include:

  • thoroughly washing hands often with soap and running water
  • staying home when sick
  • keeping social distance from others
  • avoiding contact with those who are sick
  • covering coughs and sneezes, and
  • disinfecting contact surfaces often
Please rest assured that the administrators of TLC and I are closely monitoring this very fluid health crisis with the safety of all involved being our #1 priority. There will be no quick decisions made regarding Summer Camp 2020, but I promise candid and fluid communications to keep you in-the-know as more becomes known.
